Insurance for Digital Nomads, 1/2

Right insurance - Peace of mind

As a digital nomad, having the right insurance is vital for ensuring peace of mind while you work and travel the world. With the flexibility and freedom that comes with the digital nomad lifestyle, it’s essential to be prepared for any unexpected events or emergencies. We are an entrepreneurial couple from Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, and have been working remotely for over ten years. Having good insurance is important to us and for this reason, we have tried to determine what is the best insurance for digital nomads. We’ve been using True Traveller insurance for three years and additionally, we have an affiliate partnership with *SafetyWing insurance.

Peace of Mind

Traveling and working in different countries exposes digital nomads to various risks, including health issues, accidents, theft, and travel disruptions. Good insurance provides the peace of mind that if something goes wrong, you’ll be covered and won’t face significant financial burdens.

Health Coverage

Healthcare systems vary greatly around the world, and medical expenses can be exorbitant in some countries. Having health insurance ensures you receive the necessary medical care without worrying about the costs. Coverage for emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and even routine check-ups is essential.

Travel Protection

Travel insurance covers unforeseen events such as trip cancellations, delays, or interruptions. It also protects against lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings, which can be particularly stressful when you rely on your tech gear for work.

Liability Coverage

Liability insurance protects you in case you accidentally cause damage to property or injure someone. This coverage is crucial, especially when staying in different accommodations or working in various coworking spaces.

Legal Assistance

In case of legal issues or disputes while abroad, having insurance that offers legal assistance can save you a lot of time, stress, and money.

1. Health Insurance for Digital Nomads

Health insurance is non-negotiable for every insurance company. Look for plans that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including emergency care, hospitalization, and outpatient services. Coverage for dental and mental health services can also be beneficial.

2. Travel Insurance for Nomad

Travel insurance should cover trip cancellations, delays, and interruptions, as well as lost or stolen luggage. It’s also wise to choose a policy that covers emergency evacuation and repatriation.

3. Gadget Insurance for Remote Worker

As digital nomads, our laptops, smartphones, and other gadgets are essential for our work. Gadget insurance protects these items against theft, loss, or damage.

4. Liability Insurance for Travellers

Liability insurance covers you if you accidentally cause damage to property or injure someone. This type of insurance is crucial for avoiding costly legal fees and compensation claims.

5. Income Protection Insurance for Self  Workers

Income protection insurance provides a safety net if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. It ensures you still have an income while you recover.

  • If you get sick or injured while abroad
  • Evacuation to a better equipped hospital when you need it
  • Injuries from leisure sports & activities
  • Lost checked luggage

  • Flights home if something bad happens

Digital Nomad Insurance

We’ve been using True Traveller insurance for the past three years and have found it to be highly reliable and comprehensive. True Traveller offers customizable plans that cater to the specific needs of digital nomads, including coverage for adventure sports and gadgets.

In addition to True Traveller, we also work with SafetyWing through an affiliate partnership. SafetyWing is designed specifically for digital nomads, offering flexible and affordable insurance plans. Their policies are ideal for those who are frequently on the move, providing continuous coverage that can be easily managed online.

Additionally, we have a DAN insurance policy, ensuring we are fully protected during our underwater adventures.

True Traveller has been our insurance of choice for several reasons.

Firstly, the insurance can be purchased even while you are already traveling, which offers great flexibility. The annual cost is affordable, making it a cost-effective option for long-term travelers. True Traveller provides comprehensive coverage that can be tailored to your specific needs by adding optional extras. Since we engage in extreme sports, having a policy that covers high-risk activities is essential.

For digital nomads, having good insurance is not just a safety net but a necessity. It ensures that you can travel and work with confidence, knowing that you’re protected against unexpected events and emergencies. From health and travel insurance to gadget and liability coverage, investing in comprehensive insurance plans is crucial for an stress-free and successful digital nomad lifestyle.

As experienced digital nomads, we highly recommend considering True Traveller and SafetyWing for your insurance needs.

Despite the final decision not being in our favor, our experience filing a claim with True Traveller was overwhelmingly positive. The process of making a claim was straightforward, and the customer service team responded promptly and efficiently. The matter was handled immediately, which gave us peace of mind during a stressful situation.

Incident in Thailand

We were in Thailand when we accidentally caused damage to another person’s property, resulting in the loss of their phone. Realizing the severity of the situation, we immediately went to the local police station and filed a report. Once the report was filed, we contacted True Traveller to inform them of the incident and begin the claims process.

Learning from Our Mistake

In hindsight, we should have been more careful and allowed the insurance company to handle the situation from the start. Unfortunately, we admitted our mistake to the affected party, which led to our claim being denied. True Traveller’s policy terms clearly state that no admission of fault should be made before the insurance company has made a decision. This crucial detail slipped our minds in the heat of the moment.

Valuable Lessons Learned

This experience taught us an important lesson about the importance of adhering to insurance procedures. Although our claim was denied, we appreciated the professionalism and speed with which True Traveller managed our case. We now understand the importance of not admitting fault and allowing the insurance company to handle the situation according to their procedures. This knowledge will help us navigate similar situations more effectively in the future.
